Vitiligo is due to loss or destruction of melanocytes, which are the cells that produce melanin, the pigment that determines the colour of skin, hair, and eyes. The exact cause of vitiligo is unknown. It is thought to be a systemic autoimmune disorder.

There are three theories on the cause of vitiligo:

  • The pigment cells are injured by abnormally functioning nerve cells.
  • There may be an autoimmune reaction against the pigment cells (the body may destroy its own tissue, which it perceives as foreign).
  • Autotoxic theory – the pigment cells self-destruct

White patches on the skin are the main sign of vitiligo. These patches are more common in areas where the skin is exposed to the sun. The patches may be on the hands, feet, arms, face, and lips.

Other common areas for white patches are:

  • The armpits and groin
  • Around the mouth
  • Eyes
  • Nostrils
  • Navel
  • Genitals
  • Rectal areas
